Arguably the leader in internet-based television services is Sling TV. It’s a relatively new service but it already has millions of loyal subscribers. It’s based on the premise that viewers should be able to choose what channels they get and the price that they pay. There’s no contract for services and there are even perks where you can get a free Roku 2 when you sign up for three months of service.
Sling TV lets you watch the same channels that you’re used to seeing on cable. What’s better, though, is that channels are grouped into smaller packages and entry-level pricing starts only at $20 per month. You don’t have to wait for cable or equipment, and unlike cable, you have the option of watching on your phone or your computer in addition to your big-screen tv.
Television viewers today are savvy. They want to be in command of exactly what they get and what they pay. Knowing the Sling TV channels and what packages to choose is very important for consumers. Savvy shopping can help you save money and ultimately win the game when it comes to watching more tv for less money.
Start With a Base Package
When you get Sling TV, you choose from a base package of channels. You choose the orange package of channels, the blue package, or both. The orange package is $20 and the blue package is $25.
Both of the packages have a number of the same channels. These include: A&E, AMC, BBC America, Cartoon Network, CNN, Comedy Central, Food Network, HGTV, History Channel, Lifetime, the Weather Channel, TBS, TNT, Travel Channel and others. From there, if you want ABC channels, pick the orange package. It has the Disney Channel, Freeform and the ESPN greats including ESPN, ESPN2 and ESPN3. When you get the orange package you can login to the WatchESPN App when you’re on the go, and you don’t even need a separate login to do it.
The blue package is loaded with FOX and NBC channels, and it’s great for sports lovers, too. It includes BET, FOX On-demand, Fox Sports 1 and Fox Sports 2, National Geographic, NBC Sports Network, NFL Network, Nick Jr, truTV and USA Network. Sometimes regional FOX sports networks are also available in this package. If you don’t know which one to choose, you can select both packages.
Add On Packages
Have you chosen your base package or packages? Great, now you can move on to choosing your extras. There are a number of extra packages that you can add, and they are all grouped by interest. There is a Sports Extra package for $5-$10 extra each month. What you get in the package complements what you get in your base package, so what comes in this upgrade depends on what base package you choose.
For the orange package, you get more ESPN channels such as ESPN Buzzer Beater, ESPN News and ESPN Bases Loaded. For the blue package upgrade there’s the Golf Channel and RedZone, among others. Both packages give you all the sports you can handle.
There’s a Kid’s Extra package for only $5 more per month, and with that you get Nicktoons, Sling Kids and TeenNick. If movies are more your thing, choose the Hollywood Extra package for $5 per month and get Epix, Epix 2, SundanceTV and Turner Classic Movies. Enjoy the World News Extra package, also for $5 per month, that includes CCTV News, Euronews, France 24 and the Blaze.
Other options include a Lifestyle Plus package including Cooking Channel, Hallmark Channel, VH1 and truTV. The exact options in each package depend on what your base package is so read carefully when you go to sign up. Are you looking for a laugh? Go with the Comedy Plus package and get CMT, Game Show Network, MTV, MTV2 and TV Land. This is sure to be a hit with teenagers.
If you have the orange package you can get the Broadcast Extra plus package. Enjoy ABC, UniMas and Univision with this package. There are also packages for very unique interests, such as one add on that gets you just Willow, so you can watch cricket 24 hours per day.
There are no limits to how many extra packages you can choose. Choose none or choose them all. There are also premium channels, like HBO. HBO is a bit more for an add on, at $15 per month. Cinemax is also available for $10 per month. These channels offer both live and on-demand programming. Also, Starz is an option with Sling TV.
